FAFSA Day is a program offered by College Foundation of North Carolina, the North Carolina Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and the State Employees’ Credit Union.

On FAFSA Day, Saturday February 18, 2012, college financial aid officers and other volunteers will help students complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms. The program is open to students who plan to attend college in the 2012-13 academic year.

Here is a link to locations in Durham County. Note that North Carolina Central University is the site closest to Durham Tech. Other locations at State Employees’ Credit Union are available to bank members.

Thinking of transferring to NCCU? North Carolina Central University has established scholarship opportunities for qualified full-time and part-time transfer students (including Distance Education Transfer Students, full-time and part-time) completing the Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Applied Science Degree programs from a North Carolina Community College.

North Carolina Central University’s Transfer Scholarship is a two-year scholarship for North Carolina Community College graduates who have been admitted to NCCU. A student may apply for the scholarship while making application to the University, however, the scholarship application will only be processed after the student is accepted to North Carolina Central University. Full and partial BRITE scholarships are also available; they are competitive and renewed on an annual basis. Scholarships are available to first-time freshmen, community college transfers with AS degrees or rising juniors. Click for program information or scholarship information.

Triangle Community Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications for the 2012-2013 academic year.  Information and applications for the following scholarships are available on their website, www.trianglecf.org:
The GlaxoSmithKline Opportunity Scholarship is available to US Citizens who are residents of Orange, Durham, and Wake counties who have overcome significant adversity.  Scholarships must be used for a public higher education institute in North Carolina.  Application deadline is March 15, 2012.

The Shaver-Hitchings Scholarship is provided for graduate students with a demonstrated commitment to working with alcoholism, drug abuse and addictive disorder treatment, or with preventive education on the subject of addiction. Application deadline is March 15, 2012.

The Kathryn H. Wallace Award for Artists in Community Service is awarded annually to recognize an individual practicing artist residing in Wake, Durham, Orange, or Chatham County who has made a significant contribution to the Triangle community.  Applications are due March 15, 2012.
The Felicia Brewer Opportunity Scholarship was created to provide a life-transforming opportunity for immigrant or first generation students who have overcome significant adversity.  The scholarship will be awarded to students who have attended a Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district high school.  Applications are due February 15, 2012.

SEANC Scholarship

Students who are members of the State Employees Association of NC, or those who have parents who are members of the association, are eligible to apply for the SEANC Scholarship.

The application is now available online and may be completed and returned to the Scholarship Chairman of the district of which the parent is a member. All applications must be postmarked by April 15, 2012. Judging will be conducted at the SEANC district level and the district winner in each category will be forwarded to the SEANC Central Office in Raleigh for statewide competition. All winners will be notified by June 2012.

Twenty four awards are annual scholarships (12 merit based, 12 need based) for four year colleges or university students. Four awards are annual scholarships (2 merit based, 2 need based) for student enrolled in a community college, junior college, or technical school.

Criteria are as follows:

–The applicant and/or parent or guardian must be a member of SEANC. Students whose parents are state employees but not SEANC members are not eligible for the scholarships.

–If you would like to join SEANC, please complete a membership application. Dues are $108.

–Applicants must apply through the local SEANC district. If the student requires information, please contact the SEANC representative Renee Vaughan.

–Financial need applicants must include a copy of their FAFSA student aid report with the application.

–Student must be enrolled full time throughout the award year.

Please do not mail applications to the SEANC Central Office– this will delay the judging process. Further information can be found online or by contacting Renee Vaughan at 919.833.6436 x 3333.

The Durham Tech Foundation will be accepting applications this spring, from March 1 – April 16, for scholarships to be awarded in the 2012-13 academic year.

Our online application will be available starting March 1; the completed application, including a faculty recommendation, is due no later than April 16.

Students: Classes may be out, but now is still a prime time to apply for scholarships! Many applications are due early in the calendar year.

The Assistance League of the Triangle, a nonprofit volunteer organization, assists individuals in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina (Wake, Durham, and Orange Counties) through service, resources and financial support. They offer scholarships valued at $1,000 to $2,500 per academic year. Funds must be used for tuition and educational expenses.

Scholarship for Graduating High School Seniors-
Due February 22, 2012 to your guidance counselor, and should be postmarked by March 1, 2012

  • Live in the Research Triangle area
  • Plan to enroll as freshmen at any of North Carolina’s post-secondary educational or technical institutions
  • Have grade point averages of 2.5 or better
  • Be a US Citizen or have permanent resident status

Scholarship for Working Single Mothers-
Must be postmarked by March 1, 2012

  • Be actively working single mothers residing in the Research Triangle area
  • Have a high school diploma or a GED by June 2010
  • Currently attend or plan to enroll at any of North Carolina’s post-secondary educational or technical institutions
  • Be a US Citizen or have permanent resident status

Scholarship for Health Care Profession Students
Must be postmarked by March 1, 2012

  • Reside in the Research Triangle area
  • Have a high school diploma or a GED by June 2010
  • Currently attend or plan to enroll at any North Carolina community college to pursue a certificate, diploma or associate’s degree in the health care professions
  • Be a US Citizen or have permanent resident status.

For the programs listed above, scholarship renewal may be available to students with a college grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 and above.

In 2011, the North Carolina CPA Foundation’s annual merit scholarship program received a total of 125 applications from students at 22 North Carolina colleges, universities, and community colleges. Due to their members’ generous contributions, this year they awarded 46 scholarships totaling $57,000 to very deserving students. Additionally, there were 15 awards totaling $15,000 made from the James L. McCoy Accounting Scholarship Endowment Fund.

The awards range from $1,000 to $5,000. In addition, all qualified applicants were offered a complimentary one-year NCACPA membership. The Community College STEM Scholarship provides a one-year, non-renewable award of $1,000 for students enrolled full time (minimum of 12 credit hours) at one of North Carolina’s community colleges. Students must be majoring in a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) field and be interested in pursuing a career that supports NASA’s mission including careers in the aerospace sector. Last year, DTCC student Liz Belton won this award.

Eligibility Requirements
The Community College STEM Scholarship applicant must be:

  • A permanent United States citizen
  • Enrolled full time in an NC Community College and have completed at least one semester of coursework (minimum of 12 credit hours)
  • Pursuing an Associate’s degree in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) discipline
  • In good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0).

The 2012-2013 application period is open through February 24, 2012. Awards will be announced mid-April 2012. For full information, requirements, and a link to the application, please visit the NC Space Grant website.

The North Carolina Hispanic College Fund awards annual scholarships valued between $500 and $2,500. Scholarship recipients are recent graduates of North Carolina high schools who are of Hispanic/Latino background. Recipients of an NC Hispanic College Fund scholarship must enroll in a degree program at a community college or 4-year college/university and be committed to public service and community development.
